TOKYO: Tokyo Governor KOIKE Yuriko on Tuesday inaugurated the Japan Swim 2023 competition at the Tokyo Aquatic Center, the swimming venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“As a new sacred place for swimming, we will hold many high-level international and national competitions here,” Koike said. “We hope that the best athletes in the world will come together, that many world records will be created and that we will see a range of emotions.”

The competitions that will take place from April 4 to 9 will include preliminary rounds for the intercollegiate championships, and qualifying rounds for the Asian Games and the 2023 Fukuoka World Championships.

Tokyo Aquatic Center was always meant to be a public facility as well as a venue for local and international competitions. It had a capacity of 15,000 but this was reduced to 5,000 after the Tokyo Olympics.
