DUBAI: Japan has broken a new record: The most expensive ice cream in the world.

Japanese ice cream brand Cellato set a new Guinness World Record for the most expensive icecream, with each serving of the treat priced at around 873,400 yen (approximately $6,696 USD).

The treat, named Byakuya or ‘white night’ in Japanese, is made from rare ingredients such as edible gold leaf, white truffle, and natural cheeses.

The truffle alone is grown in Italy and is priced at around two million yen (or $15,192 USD) per kg, along with Margiano Reggiano parmesan and Sakekasu, a by-product of sake production.

According to Guinness World Records, the project took 1.5 years to create and was overseen by Tadayoshi Yamada, the head chef at RiVi, an Osaka-based restaurant known for its French-Japanese fusion cuisine.

The eating process is not simple either, with patrons instructed to pour in the white truffle at the right texture, when the ice cream softens up. Then they mix it and enjoy the delicacy with a handcrafted metal spoon.

They are also advised to let the ice cream defrost at room temperature or microwave it at 500 watts for 10 to 20 seconds, if the texture is too hard.

Cellato is looking to release more products with other combinations using the finest ingredients such as caviar.
