New Delhi: Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, on Saturday agreed that they will cooperate to bring about success to a two-day summit of the Group of 20 major economies that started in New Delhi the same day.

In the meeting, held before the G-20 leaders adopted their joint declaration on the first day, Kishida said that he wants to contribute to the success of the G-20 summit by linking the outcomes of the summit of the Group of Seven major democracies that was held in the western Japan city of Hiroshima in May to the G-20 summit.

Kishida and Modi agreed to work together to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order based on the rule of law.

Kishida called on Modi to improve the investment environment in India.

He also explained Japan’s position on the release into the sea of tritium-containing treated water from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.’s meltdown-stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant in northeastern Japan.

Separately, Kishida held talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. In discussing the treated water discharge, Albanese said he commends Japan for working in a responsible manner and taking related measures.

Kishida also met with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. The Dutch leader said he fully supports the Japanese government’s efforts related to the treated water release.
