TOKYO: Japan’s Foreign minister KAMIKAWA Yoko on Friday rejected criticism of Japan’s veto of a draft resolution by Russia calling for a ceasefire in Gaza at the UN Security Council on Oct. 17.
She explained that “the resolution was hastily submitted without sufficient discussion among the Council members, and Japan opposed it because of its lack of balance.”
On the contrary, the minister said, Japan voted in favor of Brazil’s resolution adopted by the Security Council on Oct. 18, as the country could support most of the resolution, given the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Kamikawa was speaking at a press conference at the ministry on Friday, and in her reply to a question by Arab News Japan, she said: “Japan will continue to make active efforts by working with the international community to ensure the situation calms down as soon as possible.”
Minister Kamikawa emphasized the importance of stability in the region, saying sea lanes that bring energy resources to Japan are also located there, so we must maintain dialogue to de-escalate the situation.
