TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio is increasing efforts to meet North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, as he pushes for a diplomatic breakthrough, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
According to FT, the summit’s aim is to “secure the release of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea decades ago.”
Kishida told Japanese lawmakers in parliament last week that it was important to build ties with Pyongyang.
The last time a Japanese prime minister and North Korean leader met was in 2004, when KOIZUMI Junichiro met with Kim Jong Il in North Korea’s capital.
