TOKYO: A greenery initiative by Tokyo Metropolitan Government is allowing 15,000 people the opportunity to walk along a section of Tokyo’s elevated expressway during the annual Golden Week holiday, which ends on May 6.

The event promoted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Kousoku Expressway Co. allows people to experience the “pedestrian space of the future” by walking freely along the entire two-kilometer stretch of the expressway from Shimbashi to Kyobashi districts.

Tokyo Government’s plan sees this stretch of expressway, which runs through the center of Tokyo, being transformed into the “Tokyo Sky Corridor,” a pedestrian-centered elevated passageway adorned with greenery. The redevelopment project is expected to last until the 2040s.

The event includes concerts, stage performances, shops selling local products, market stalls and art events within four sections: Mobility, Play, Ethical and Interaction.

Tokyo Government says Ginza Sky Walk is just one of their greenery initiatives aimed at creating new green networks and relaxing spaces close to nature in Tokyo.
