TOKYO: A student group at Kyoto University, one of the top universities in Japan, has issued a statement in support of Palestine and denounced the atrocities perpetrated by the Israeli military in Gaza.

The statement was issued in the name of the Kyoto University Association in Solidarity with the Palestinian People and urged the university to cut ties with Israel and support the Palestinian people.

“We, the Kyoto University Association in Solidarity with the Palestinian People, are writing to express our grave concern over the ongoing atrocities and human rights violations against Palestinian civilians,” the statement said. “As an institution committed to academic excellence, ethical leadership, and global citizenship, we believe it is imperative for Kyoto University to take a clear stance against the oppression and suffering endured by the Palestinian people.”

“The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a negative legacy of colonialism, imperialism, apartheid and genocide of the 20th century that must be liquidated by mankind and is an issue that must be acted upon proactively with a deep awareness of the importance of a universal perspective for the harmonious and peaceful development of human society.”

The students demanded that Kyoto University publicly condemns the violence against Palestinian civilians, refrains from supporting the Israeli military, and provide support assistance and support to Palestinian students by establishing scholarships, academic exchanges, and support programs.

They added: “The ongoing violence against Palestinians has been ongoing for more than 75 years since the Nakba in 1948, due to prejudice and discrimination. As members of the Kyoto University Association in Solidarity with the Palestinian People, we believe that our institution has a moral obligation to uphold these principles and demonstrate solidarity with oppressed communities worldwide.”
