TOKYO: Russia’s cooperation agreement with Japan on the decommissioning of Russian nuclear weapons was terminated on Tuesday, Russia’s state-run Tass news agency quoted the Russian foreign ministry as saying Friday.

Moscow announced the decision to terminate the 1993 agreement in November last year to retaliate against Japanese sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. At the time, Japan complained that such a unilateral announcement was made without prior notice.

The Russian ministry said the agreement was supposed to cease to have effect six months after Moscow notified Tokyo about the decision to terminate it, according to Tass.
