TOKYO: Japan has decided to revise the Implementation Plan for the International Peace Cooperation Assignments in South Sudan, extending the period of operation, Japan’s Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

Japan has dispatched personnel to the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) since November 2011.

On April 29, the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2729 (2024), which extended the mandate of UNMISS until April 30, 2025.

UNMISS is the only United Nations peacekeeping operation to which Japan currently deploys military personnel. The dispatch of Headquarters staff to UNMISS is intended to support the peace process in South Sudan.

Six staff officers are currently engaged in UNMISS duties, including a Deputy Chief of Staff and his personal assistant, in addition to officers in charge of planning and coordination in the areas of logistics, database, engineering and air operations at the Headquarters of the Mission in Juba.
