TOKYO: Incumbent KOIKE Yuriko is pulling away in the Tokyo gubernatorial race, according to a poll carried out by Japan News Network. Tokyo will go to the polls to elect a governor on July 7.
JNN conducted an online survey of voters in Tokyo on June 22 and found out that Koike is well in the lead, drawing support from about 90 percent of people backing the Tomin First Party and about 80 percent of the supporters of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito Party, the two national ruling parties in Japan.
Former House of Councilors member Renho – who goes by a single name – and former Mayor of Aki-Takata City ISHIMARU Shinji are next, followed by former Chief of Staff of the Air Self-Defense Force TAMOGOMI Toshio, who is somewhat further behind.
However, in this survey, about 30 percent of those surveyed said they have not yet decided who to vote for. Fifty-two other candidates have put their names forward as candidates in the Tokyo gubernatorial election, making the total number of candidates in the election a record 56.
