TOKYO: Japanese Foreign Minister KAMIKAWA Yoko on Wednesday congratulated Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani on being re-elected as President of Mauritania.

Following the Mauritanian presidential election on June 29, the Constitutional Council of Mauritania announced that incumbent Cheikh El Ghazouani had been re-elected.

“Japan reiterates its respect to Mauritania for its important role in peace and stability of the region and is confident that Mauritania’s social and economic development will further progress under the strong leadership of President Ghazouani,” Kamikawa said in a statement.

She added that Japan is committed to further strengthening friendly and cooperative relations between Japan and Mauritania– the Chair of the African Union this year – including cooperation through the TICAD process.
