TOKYO: Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s former Ambassador to Japan, has been named as Iran’s new Foreign Minister, according to a JIJI Press report citing Iranian state media.

Iran’s new President, Masoud Pezechkian, who took office at the end of July, submitted a list of ministerial candidates for his administration to Iran’s parliament on August 11.

Former Deputy Foreign Minister Araghchi was among the candidates and was chosen to be Iran’s Foreign Minister.

Among other candidates, several ministers from the previous conservative government of Ebrahim Raisi were retained by the new President, which observers see as a sign of reconciliation between the hard-liners and moderates.

If Pezechkian’s list of candidates is approved in a vote of confidence in the parliament, the new cabinet is likely to be inaugurated this month, according to the report.
