
The foreign ministry in Tokyo confirmed the appointment of IWAI Fumio as ambassador to Egypt.
“I was appointed Ambassador of Japan to the Arab Republic of Egypt at the Cabinet meeting of Japan held two days ago,” said Iwai on X (formerly twitter).
“My work as Ambassador of Japan to Saudi Arabia will soon come to an end,” he confirmed.
Iwai served as ambassador to the Kingdom from Dec. 4, 2020 till date.
“I was honored to assume this position in December 2020 and consider it one of the best and happiest periods in my diplomatic life.
“I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for the constant support and great assistance I have received from the Kingdom’s leadership, government and people,” he added.
Prior to his stint in Saudi, Iwai was Japan’s Ambassador to Iraq.
Iwai entered the foreign ministry in 1984 after graduating from the faculty of law at Kyoto University in Japan.
His previous posts included director-general of the Secretariat of the Cabinet Office’s International Peace Cooperation Headquarters.
In September 2020, he became attached to the foreign minister’s secretariat.
