TOKYO: Japan on Tuesday condemned the October 11 attack committed by the Israel Occupation forces on the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that caused injuries to the peacekeepers and expressed deep concerns over the intrusion of those forces on the premises of the UNIFIL compound on October 13.
Foreign Minister IWAYA Takeshi expressed in an official statement “serious concern about attacks.”
“Attacks against personnel acting for the United Nations are unacceptable, and Japan condemns all threats to the safety and security of UNIFIL,” Foreign Minister Iwaya said.
Japan, in a bid to prevent further deterioration of the situation, is fervently calling for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The country is also urging all parties to uphold international law, including international humanitarian law, to ensure the safety of UN personnel, and to fully implement relevant UN Security Council Resolutions, including UNSCR 1701, according to the statement.
Minister Iwaya underscored that to prevent further escalation, Japan is strongly urging the parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and make sincere efforts to reach a diplomatic settlement, reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful resolution.
