TOKYO: KONO Taro, Japan’s Minister for Digital Transformation, Minister for Digital Reform, Minister for Consumer Affairs and Food Safety, and Minister in Charge of Civil Service Reform, and a member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party secured his re-election in Sunday’s general election with a resounding victory.

Kono came out on top in Kanagawa No. 15 district and told local media: “I want to go back to the beginning and build from the ground up. When the situation is tough, I think we need to unite the Liberal Democrats and support the Prime Minister’s administration.”

Kono, a popular figure among the public, secured nearly 80 percent of the vote in his Kanagawa district, which lies to the west of Tokyo.

The 58-year-old has served nine terms in the House of Representatives and has been a candidate for leader of the LDP two times.
