TOKYO: The US Space Force launched operations at a Japan unit on Wednesday to strengthen collaboration with the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to enhance deterrence in light of increased space activity by Russia and China.
Brig. Gen. Anthony Mastalir, commander of US Space Forces Indo-Pacific, speaking at an inauguration ceremony at the US military’s Yokota Air Base in Tokyo, emphasized the importance of boosting collective deterrence in the realm of space.
“These partnership efforts send a message to any potential adversary that the US-Japan alliance is stronger than ever, and we are ready to defend our land, in the air, in the maritime domain, and now in space,” he said.
“Across the region and the globe, there are states seeking to undermine space and international order,” Lt. Gen. Stephen Jost, commander of US Forces Japan, said, citing Russia’s repeated cyberattacks that cut off satellite communications in Ukraine as an example.
The US Space Force Japan unit will contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region through efforts linked to space, such as intelligence gathering using satellites and the enhancement of missile defense capabilities, Jost said.
With an initial staff of around 10, the Japan unit is tasked with coordinating with the Japanese Air SDF’s Space Operations Group.
