TOKYO: With 2025 marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Japan’s Emperor reflected on the pain of war in his New Year address to the nation on Wednesday.

“Since the end of the war, the peace and prosperity of our country has been built through the tireless efforts of its people, but I am deeply saddened by the fact that many lives are still being lost around the world due to war and conflict,” Emperor Naruhito said. “In order to build a peaceful world, I feel it is important for people to accept each other’s differences and work together.”

The Emperor also remembered the tough times faced by many of his countrymen in 2024, particularly the earthquake that shook the Noto Peninsula on New Year’s Day last year, which killed over 500 people, as well as devastating typhoons and floods.

“While I am concerned about those who are in difficulties, I am also happy that there are many people who are working steadily for such people and for society,” he said. “I hope that this year, people will be able to overcome various difficulties while caring for and supporting each other.”

“I pray that the new year will be one in which our country and the people of the world can move forward with hope.”
