Japan and Indonesia agree to advance defense cooperation

TOKYO: The defense ministers of Japan and Indonesia have agreed to establish a defense consultation on both countries’ maritime security, including defense equipment and technology cooperation, Japan’s Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.

Japanese Defense Minister NAKATANI Gen and his Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin met in Indonesia and welcomed increased defense cooperation between the two countries in the wake of 2023’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Japan and Indonesia.

Nakatani expressed grave concerns over recent military activities surrounding Japan and the two Ministers also exchanged views on other regional developments, including those in the East and South China Seas.

They said they would continue strengthening collaboration through multilateral exercises such as “Super Garuda Shield” and “Komodo.”

In addition, they agreed to step up cooperation and exchanges between personnel, such as the newly initiated officer exchange program hosted by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.

The two Ministers welcomed the successful outcome of the Maritime Cooperation and Connectivity Conference that focuses on the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, which was cohosted by Japan and Indonesia in December.
