DUBAI: According to Tohoku University Professor Hiroshi Yoshida, Japan will be left with only one child by Jan.5, 2720 if the country’s current birthrate remains the same.

Yoshida forecasted that in 695 years, one child under the age of 14 will be the only minor in the Asian country.

The professor, who works at Tohoku University’s Research Center for Aged Economy and Society, has been working on similar estimates every April since 2012.

His simulation is calculated using the annual rate of population decline among children, based on the difference between the number in April from the previous year and the current number, The Japan Times reported.

Japan’s birthrate is continuing to rapidly decrease. The Japanese health ministry shows the birthrate falling to 1.2 percent in 2023.

The declining rates are due to fewer people getting married, as a 2020 report shows that around 28 percent of men at the age of 50 had never been married, while the percentage was around 17.8 percent for women.
