TOKYO: In line with UN sanctions, Japan has taken Lionel Dumont off the list of terrorist-affiliated individuals and entities whose assets are frozen, the Foreign Ministry reported on Thursday.
According to the United Nations, Dumont was sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment in France for crimes committed with the “Roubaix Gang,” which was composed of French converts to Islam.
The French Association of Victims of Terrorism claimed that the purpose of the creation of this group was to carry out robberies in the Lille metropolitan area to finance their cause. Between January and March 1996, several extremely violent shootings were perpetrated by the group, it said.
Dumont, who spent time in Japan when he was wanted in France, was released from prison in November 2021.
Japan has imposed asset freezes and other measures on Taliban-related persons designated by the United Nations Security Council Sanctions Committee.
