The grand, wooden roof at the upcoming Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai was recognized as the world’s largest wooden architectural structure by Guinness World Records.
The ‘Grand Ring’ at the exposition has a roof measuring over 61,000 square meters, according to Kyodo News. The structure is made with approximately 27,000 cubic meters of timber, including Japanese cypress and cedar, as well as European red pines.
The roof’s architect Sosuke Fujimoto told an award ceremony he hoped the Expo symbol would send out a message about the importance of forming bonds in a world that has been increasingly divided lately.
The roof was completed on Feb. 27 to represent the expo philosophy of “Unity in Diversity.”
