TOKYO: North Korea has accused G7 countries of hypocrisy for trying to deprive it of nuclear weapons while maintaining their own and spreading defense technology to non-nuclear countries.
A spokesman for North Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday that labeled the G7 as “a US-led nuclear criminal group” and “the main culprits of destroying world peace and security and the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.”
“The facts show that the G7, which consists of the United States and its follower allies, is the root of the emergence and worsening of the international nuclear crisis,” the North stated. The statement said that denuclearization should begin with the G7 countries.
“The G7, which has fallen into a nuclear criminal group that severely threatens international peace and security, must completely abandon its anachronistic ambitions of nuclear hegemony before anyone speaks of its denuclearization,” the statement said.
“The status of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as a nuclear power, which has been permanently established by the supreme law of the state, does not change by whether or not it is recognized, and our nuclear forces protect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and fundamental interests of the country and the Korean Peninsula.”
The North accused the G7 countries of nuclear proliferation and sharing technology with other countries and accused the United States of causing nuclear crises on the Korean Peninsula and in other parts of the world.
The statement also criticized the United Kingdom for transferring nuclear submarine technology to non-nuclear countries, France for “fueling” nuclear proliferation in Europe, and Japan for its “nuclear alliance” with the US.
In conclusion, the North’s statement said: “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will renew and strengthen its own nuclear forces in response to external nuclear threats. As a responsible nuclear power, it will firmly protect the peace and security of the countries, regions and the world.”
