TOKYO: Japan will send a C-130 aircraft of the Japan Air Self-Defense Forces to Myanmar as early as Tuesday to transport medical goods, including medicine and test kits, to the Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Medical Team that is already on site in Myanmar.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry said the JDR team is providing humanitarian assistance in response to the earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, killing over 3,000 people.
The Ministry added that Japan intends to continue providing as much humanitarian assistance as possible. This will include medical requirements that directly benefit the people of Myanmar under the Japan’s policy of supporting the people of Myanmar in their time of need.
The earthquake had killed 3,564 people and injured 5,012, as of April 6, Myanmar’s state-run media reported.
Japan initially dispatched a team of five people to Myanmar on March 31 and this was followed by a larger group of 27 members on April 2.
Japan has also sent waterproof sheets and will distribute essential goods (sanitary items, water, water purifiers, etc.) to those affected through JICA.
On April 2, the Government of Japan announced that it will make an Emergency Grant of approximately $6 million through international organizations.
