Japan sends second Disaster Relief Medical Team to Myanmar

TOKYO: Japan has sent a second Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) Medical Team to Myanmar to help with recovery efforts following the March 28 earthquake, Japan’s Foreign Ministry announced on Saturday.

The latest JDR team to head to Myanmar has 37 members, including doctors and nurses registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The Japanese government also said it will implement humanitarian assistance in areas such as health and medical care, water, sanitation and hygiene, and food through the International Committee of the Red Cross, the International Organization for Migration, the United Nations Children’s Fund and the United Nations World Food Program, in consideration of the humanitarian needs on the ground.

The Foreign Ministry stated: “Taking into consideration the humanitarian needs on the ground, the Government of Japan continues to provide as much humanitarian assistance as possible in the manner that directly benefits the people of Myanmar who are in need.”

The government said the disbursement of the $6 million aid granted on April 2 would be as follows: International Committee of the Red Cross: Health and Medical Care, $2 million; International Organization for Migration: Health and Medical Care, $1 million; United Nations Children’s Fund: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, $2 million; United Nations World Food Program: Food, $1 million.
