TOKYO: Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru on Wednesday dismissed Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister ETO Taku due to his insensitive remarks suggesting that there is no need to buy rice despite the soaring prices of this essential staple for the Japanese people.
Eto’s remarks at a fundraising event organized by the LDP’s local chapter in Saga Prefecture were not just insensitive, but highly controversial. His statement, “I’m not buying rice. Thanks to my supporters who give me so much of it, I have so much in my house that I could sell some,” Sparked widespread protests from opposition parties, ruling party members, and the public. Despite his later apology and retraction, the damage was irreversible, leading to his unprecedented dismissal from Ishiba’s Cabinet.
Ishiba initially aimed to keep the Minister in position, arguing that Eto is essential as Japan’s agriculture sector confronts a crisis. However, the upcoming July Parliament elections and the fear of a negative impact on the Cabinet’s popularity led him to reconsider. The potential passing of a motion of no confidence while the ruling party was in the minority was a significant factor in his decision to dismiss Eto.
The dismissal of Eto, the first member of Ishiba’s Cabinet to be sacked, raises questions about the potential impact on Ishiba’s political standing. The Prime Minister’s responsibility in making the appointment is now under scrutiny, adding a layer of complexity to the situation.
Eto, elected eight times from Miyazaki’s 2nd District in the House of Representatives, had a long and successful political career. However, his controversial remarks have now resulted in his dismissal.
