TOKYO: The Japanese government opposes Israel’s increased military operations in Gaza, Chief Cabinet Secretary HAYASHI Yoshimasa stated on Tuesday.
Hayashi emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is reaching catastrophic levels. The intensified ground operations are worsening the situation, resulting in numerous casualties, especially among civilians. This is a serious concern that requires immediate attention.”
Hayashi highlighted the significance of the two-state solution by stating, “We believe that the long-sought-after two-state solution is essential for resolving the Palestinian issue. However, Israel’s military actions, which we consider to be a ‘reoccupation’ of Gaza, do not support this goal.”
Minister Hayashi emphasized the importance of a ceasefire, stating, “We firmly oppose Israel’s military actions and urge the Israeli government to prioritize a ceasefire. This is crucial to prevent further casualties and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.”
Hayashi emphasized the importance of Israel returning to negotiations. He and Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi expressed this clearly to the Israeli foreign minister during his recent visit to Japan. Additionally, a joint statement from the G20 foreign ministers underscored that Israel should not hinder the delivery of humanitarian aid.
“The UN and humanitarian organizations should carry out their activities freely, and we are conveying this message to the Israeli government,” Hayashi stated. “We will continue our diplomatic efforts in collaboration with relevant countries.”
