TOKYO: Japan has delisted Yassine Chekkouri from the designated list for asset freezing and other measures pursuant to the Foreign Exchange and Foreign Trade Act, the Foreign Ministry confirmed on Friday.
The move was made in line with various United Nations Security Council resolutions that have applied asset freezing and other measures on a total of 541 terrorist-affiliated individuals and entities. That number has now been reduced to 540.
On August 23, 2024, the Security Council Committee stated that “pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011) and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al‑Qaida and associated individuals, groups, undertakings and entities removed [Yassine Chekkouri] from the ISIL (Da’esh) and Al‑Qaida Sanctions List after concluding its consideration of the de-listing request for this name submitted through the Office of the Ombudsperson established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1904 (2009), and of the Comprehensive Report of the Ombudsperson on this de-listing request.”
As a result of the Security Council decision, the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo were no longer applicable to Chekkouri, a 58-year-old Moroccan.
The UN’s ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List is updated regularly based on information provided by member states and international and regional organizations.
