TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru received a courtesy call on Monday from Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and expressed his condolences for the staff members who have lost their lives from attacks by Israel in Gaza, Japan’s Foreign Ministry stated.

Ishiba expressed his respect for UNRWA’s efforts in supporting Palestine refugees and stated that Japan will work towards ensuring an environment that allows humanitarian assistance activities to take place in Gaza.

In response, Lazzarini expressed his appreciation for Japan’s support and provided an overview of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, UNRWA’s current situation and the Agency’s efforts to improve its governance.

The pair reaffirmed their commitment to continue working closely together in supporting Palestine refugees as the people in Gaza face severe circumstances.
