TOKYO: Japan will step up efforts to court researchers from the United States amid concerns about the U.S. government’s shifting policies on academic work, Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru said on Wednesday.
Measures would include invitations to “excellent foreign researchers, including from the U.S. … as the U.S. government’s policy shifts pose concerns over research activities in the U.S.,” Ishiba told the government’s science council.
Japanese universities have offered a range of incentives – including tuition fee waivers, research grants and help with travel arrangements – to attract students impacted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s crackdown on academic institutions.
