TOKYO: Japan’s IWAYA Takeshi and the rest of the G7 foreign ministers issued a statement following their recent meeting in The Hague that reaffirms Israel’s “right to defend itself” in the context of its conflicts in Gaza and Iran.

The G7 foreign ministers stated: “We reiterate our support for the security of Israel” while ironically also reiterating their “commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East.”

The G7 foreign ministers were more intent on pressuring Iran, stating, “Iran can never have nuclear weapons.”

They said Iran should not return to “its unjustified enrichment activities” and called for a resumption of a deal to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities, adding that cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was a requirement to ensure safety.

The statement said Iran should “provide the IAEA with verifiable information about all nuclear material in Iran, including by providing access to IAEA inspectors.” It also condemned calls in Iran for the arrest and execution of IAEA Director General Grossi.

While supporting the ceasefire between Israel and Iran announced by US President Trump, the foreign ministers urged all parties to avoid actions that could further destabilize the region, while once again saying Israel had the right to defend itself.
