TOKYO: The Japanese Embassy in Syria has called for a ceasefire in the country that must be upheld by all parties, including Israel.

“Japan calls on all parties to maintain the territorial integrity and national unity of Syria and to respect Syria’s independence and sovereignty,” a statement said. The Embassy says it is essential to protect civilian lives as a priority.

The call comes in the wake of attacks by Israel following sectarian fighting in the mostly Druze Southern province of Sweida.

Israeli forces launched airstrikes into Syria’s capital of Damascus on Wednesday, hitting the Defense Ministry building and an area near the presidential palace. Israel claimed it was intervening to defend the minority Druze sect in southern Syria.
