TOKYO: The cumulative number of novel coronavirus infection cases confirmed in Japan stood at 18,657 as of 10 a.m. Monday (1 a.m. GMT), up by 408 from a week before.

The nationwide death toll grew by 29 to 973. 

The infection count includes 17,492 people who contracted COVID-19 in the country, as well as 712 people who were aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined off Yokohama, south of Tokyo, earlier this year.

The total also includes 149 crew members of the Costa Atlantica cruise ship which was hit by a group infection while the ship was docked in Nagasaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan, and 15 people who returned to Japan aboard government-chartered flights.

Among Japan' 47 prefectures, Tokyo had the highest cumulative number of COVID-19 patients at 5,783, followed by Osaka at 1,809, and Kanagawa at 1,435.
