TOKYO: Following the end of the state of emergency in the entire country, Greenpeace Japan stressed that the government should take pro-environment measures as part of a “green recovery.”
“Greenpeace Japan strongly urges the Japanese government to promote a ‘green recovery,’ including climate emergency measures, in order to reduce the risk of future infections and to bolster a resilient society and economy,” said Sam Annesley, executive director of the organization, in a statement released Monday.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced the same day that the country’s state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic was over in all remaining prefectures and Tokyo.
“While the COVID-19 state of emergency has been fully lifted by the government, the climate emergency continues to threaten us all,” said Annesley. “Public health and our environment are closely related. We need to move forward with climate emergency measures to minimize the risk of future infectious diseases.”
