TOKYO: Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, agreed Thursday to resume talks at an early date on a bilateral peace treaty and joint economic activities on disputed islands.

Working-level negotiations on the issues between the two countries have been stalled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During their 45-minute phone conversations, Motegi and Lavrov also confirmed that their countries will continue to closely cooperate in the fight against the pandemic.

Lavrov highly evaluated Tokyo's response to the pandemic, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

The two ministers may have taken up Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's possible participation in an event that Russia will host on June 24 to mark the 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany, sources familiar with the matter said.
