TOKYO: Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi is expected to visit Britain in mid-August, this will be the first overseas visit by a Japanese minister since such ministerial trips were suspended earlier this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, government sources said July 17.

The main purpose of the possible visit by Motegi is to hold final-stage talks with British International Trade Secretary, Elizabeth Truss, on a new bilateral trade agreement that both governments are aiming to reach a broad accord on this summer.

“A new trade and investment framework is necessary for Japanese and British businesses to continue smoothly,” Motegi told a press conference. “We need to enter the final stage (of the trade negotiations) now,” he added.

The Japanese and British governments started full-fledged trade talks in June, following Britain’s exit from the European Union in late January.

During his possible visit to Britain, Motegi is also likely to have talks with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, a senior Japanese Foreign Ministry official said.

Motegi and Raab are expected to discuss their countries’ policies on China, including those on the situation in Hong Kong and Chinese-made 5G communications equipment.

Britain has lifted restrictions on travel from Japan, no longer requiring visitors from the Asian country to self-quarantine for two weeks.
