TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday expressed his eagerness to hold a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin after the COVID-19 pandemic ends.
“I hope to consider the next summit (with Putin) after bringing an end to the coronavirus epidemic promptly,” Abe said at a meeting with House of Councilors lawmaker Muneo Suzuki of Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Innovation Party).
The last in-person meeting between Abe and Putin took place in Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East in September 2019.
“I aim to consolidate Japan-Russian relations,” the Japanese leader said. “I will do all I can to resolve the territorial issue (over four Russian-held islands) and conclude a (World War II) peace treaty between the two countries,” he stressed.
