TOKYO: A record 472 new cases of novel coronavirus infection were confirmed in Tokyo on August 1, the metropolitan government said.
The daily count in the Japanese capital eclipsed the previous high of 463 cases marked July 31 to hit a new record for the third straight day.
Elsewhere in the country, Nagasaki and Mie prefectures saw 13 and 11 infection cases, both record highs.
The Tottori prefectural government said that two of four infection cases reported on Friday were a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s who are staff writers for Shin Nihonkai Shimbun, a local daily publisher.
The two work at the same workplace as another man in his 40s who was confirmed to be infected on July 30.
