Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato took part in a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the establisment of the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo on November 1, which was built in 1920 to pay tribute to the Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken.

The ceremony included Shinto musicians and Shinto priests in ritual clothing  performing a ceremonial rite  to mark the anniversary.

The emperor ruled Japan during one of its most tumultuous times, which was when it transformed from a feudal society that is closed to foreign countries into a modern, constitutional government and international trading power.
