TOKYO: A high-level panel for a sustainable ocean economy, comprised of leaders of 14 countries, including Japan and Norway, on Wednesday called on all coastal and ocean nations to draw up their own plans aimed at protecting fishing and marine resources by 2030.
The call was made in a leaders’ statement, the first of its kind released by the panel since it was launched in 2018.
A variety of goals were included in the statement, such as a recovery of wild fish stocks to sustainable levels, nurturing aquaculture, minimizing fishery waste, and securing equitable access to ocean resources.
Also, each ocean panel member country committed to putting a sustainable ocean plan in place by 2025.
In 2018, Japan adopted its third basic plan on ocean policy.
