TOKYO: KONO Taro, Japan’s Minister in Charge of Administrative Reform, reached 2,262,000 followers on Twitter on February 7, passing former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s 2,261,000 to become the Diet member with the largest number of followers.

The figure reflects the growing popularity of Kono, who is also responsible for the COVID-19 vaccination program in Japan. Kono is seen as a strong candidate to become prime minister in the future.

Kono posts information about vaccines on his Twitter account, as well as adding posts on a lot of soft topics and interacting with other users.

When he was Minister of Defense last year, he asked the public for help in passing the number of followers for Mr. Abe. His openness to criticism and posting accurate information has helped to raise his profile.
