TOKYO: The disapproval rating for Japan’s prime minister SUGA Yoshihide’s cabinet went down to 44%, from 49%, while its support rate was at 39%, unchanged from mid-January, according to a survey conducted in the weekend by the mass distribution Yomiuri Shimbun daily conducted in the weekend.

The poll showed that 34% of respondents approved the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, while 57% disapproved. It was notable that 80% of respondents supported the government’s decision to extend the state of emergency in 10 prefectures through March 7, a likely result of decreasing number of new infections.

Support for the main political parties stayed the same, with 37% of respondents said they supported the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, and 5% supported the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, and 4% supported Komeito the smaller partner in the ruling coalition.

The majority of respondents, or 42%, however, said they don’t support any political party.
