TOKYO: The United States and Japanese governments have agreed to extend by one year the current special agreement on the costs of stationing United States Forces Japan (USFJ), and to continue negotiations toward the agreement of a new special agreement after April 1, 2022.
An official statement issued by the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo said the US and Japanese governments shall maintain the amount of facility maintenance costs provided but that they will not fall below 20.6 billion yen (about $1.95 billion) each year during the valid period of the current special agreement.
Japan’s current contribution towards hosting US military bases, known as “omoiyari yosan” or the “sympathy budget,” will expire in March 2021.
