Foreign Minister Motegi shares video message to celebrate emperor’s birthday

Foreign Minister Motegi spoke publicly in celebration of Emperor Naruhito’s 61st birthday on Feb 23 by sharing a congratulatory video message amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that has resulted in the cancellation of traditional practices due to increased restrictions.

In the video message, Motegi expressed his admiration and appreciation for the emperor’s efforts at fortifying Japan’s bilateral relations, while also sharing his heartfelt wishes, and good health for His Majesty Emperor Naruhito and the public.

“His Majesty the Emperor also exchanged numerous personal telegrams with leading figures from around the world. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for His Majesty’s devotion to deepening and enriching the friendship between Japan and other countries and regions,” Foreign Minister Motegi said.

Foreign Minister Motegi painted a clear image of the primary issues faced globally, which include COVID-19, globalization, digitalization, climate change as well as the “challenge to universal values and the international order on which peace and prosperity have been founded within the international community,” he said.

Aside from citing the predominant issues, Motegi also stressed Japan’s objectives which include aiding in rebuilding the global economy and expanding free and fair economic zones, amongst others.

“Japan will strive to further strengthen the Japan-US alliance, realize a free and open Indo-Pacific, engage in foreign diplomacy with neighboring countries including China, the Republic of Korea and Russia, deal with various pending matters related to North Korea,” Foreign Minister Motegi listed.

The promotion of digitization was also stressed as an important goal for Japan before concluding his speech.
