TOKYO: The Japanese government expressed “strong concern” about Iran’s announcement on suspension of transparency measures under the JCPOA, and the measures taken by Tehran to halt IAEA’s inspections in accordance with the Additional Protocol.

The foreign ministry in Tokyo said that while taking note of the Joint Statement by Iran and the IAEA which ensures the continuation of certain verification and monitoring activities by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Additional Protocol, Japan supports the JCPOA which contributes to the international non-proliferation regime and thereby to the stability of the Middle East.

From this standpoint, “Japan once again strongly urges Iran to comply with the JCPOA, to immediately return to its commitment under the agreement and to refrain from measures that may undermine the agreement. We also urge Iran to cooperate fully and timely with the IAEA,” the foreign ministry in Tokyo said on Wednesday evening.

“Japan strongly supports the IAEA’s efforts on verification and monitoring in Iran, and will continue its diplomatic efforts toward easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East region as well as reinforcing of the international non-proliferation regime, in coordination with relevant countries and international organizations including the IAEA.”
