TOKYO: Ten years after the Fukushima nuclear power-plant disaster, a 73-year-old former farmer from the village of Iitate is asking for a reassessment of compensation for damage caused by the disaster.

Hiroshi Kanno lodged a complaint with the Tokyo District Court for improved compensation for the villagers of Iitate, which was classified as one of the most beautiful villages of Japan. The population of 6,500 were known for farming and fishing.

After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, 3,000 people were evacuated and had to live in emergency shelters.

According to Kanno, only 20 percent of the surface of Iitate has been decontaminated. They are known for its forests, rivers and wild mushrooms, but the forests and rivers are still contaminated and the mushrooms cannot be eaten due to high levels of radioactivity.

Kanno wants TEPCO to recognize its responsibility for problems arising from the disaster.
