TOKYO: Protesters opposed to the Tokyo Olympics took to the street in the Harumi district of Tokyo on Friday night to stage a demonstration near the Olympic Village and calling for the Games to be canceled.
Around 100 demonstrators shouted through megaphones, criticizing holding the Olympics during a pandemic with infection rates rising rapidly in Tokyo.
They also carried banners saying: “Don’t mobilize children for the corona disaster” and “The torch relay originated at the Nazi Olympics.”
Other signs said that taxes should be for the poor and implied that the Olympics are staged for big business and the rich.
Further, protesters chanted slogans hostile to the IOC Chairman Thomas Bach and held up signs against his visit earlier in the day to Hiroshima and Nagasaki saying his excursions are “part of a PR campaign to buy Japanese sympathy.”
