Japan’s Foreign Minister meets President-elect of UNGA

TOKYO: Abdulla Shahid, the President-elect of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), met with Japanese Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu on Friday.

Motegi emphasized the importance of the UN Security Council reform and expressed his expectations that Shahid would help realize such reform.

Motegi congratulated Shahid, who is the foreign minister of the Maldives, on his election as President of the 76th session of UNGA.

Motegi stated that Japan would extend full support to Shahid in addressing challenges faced by the international community. In response, Shahid expressed his appreciation for the invitation from Japan and promised his support.

The two sides expressed grave concerns over the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and confirmed the importance of the international community working together to resolve issues there.

The two ministers also exchanged views on addressing issues related to North Korea, with Motegi seeking understanding and cooperation in efforts to resolve the abduction issue. Shahid offered his support on the matter.

Motegi explained Japan’s efforts in fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic through provision of vaccines and shared Japan’s initiatives in addressing climate change.

Shahid said he appreciated Japan’s contributions to addressing these global issues.

The two sides also exchanged views on the bilateral relationship of Japan and Maldives and agreed to further strengthen the relationship.
