Following the end of the Tokyo 2020 Games, Tokyo Governor Koike, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti shared video messages reflecting on the success of the events.
The Olympic Games have now been passed on to Paris, scheduled to take place in 2024, and Los Angeles in 2028.
In the seven-minute video announcement, Koike shared how “I’m very pleased that we were able to bring the Games to a successful conclusion thanks to the support and cooperation of the athletes and people all over the world. Please allow me to express my heartfelt gratitude.”
Koike went on to express support for the upcoming games.
“I have no doubt that the Paris 2024 and LA 2028 Games will inspire the world” by carrying on the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Games and delivering an event that is sustainable, diverse, and inclusive, Koike shared.
Hidalgo also outlined her appreciation for the Tokyo 2020 Games as a symbol of hope amidst the pandemic.
“It is with much pride and enthusiasm that our city and our country are preparing to take up the flame again, after a 100-year wait,” she said.
Hidalgo also stressed her gratitude for the partnership formed between Tokyo, Paris and Los Angeles as a result of the Games.
Garcetti reiterated the importance of the games, and extended congratulations to Governor Koike for the successful close of the Olympics and Paralympics.
The Tokyo 2020 Games officially came to an end following the Paralympics closing ceremony on Aug. 5.
