TOKYO: Japanese prefectural governors said Monday that they will ask candidates in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s upcoming leadership election whether they support lockdowns to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

The National Governors’ Association will also ask the candidates about views on funding for COVID-19 relief measures, a proposed government agency in charge of child welfare and the revitalization of regional economies.

The association will ask the candidates to give answers in writing. It will release the answers on Sept. 28, a day before the LDP presidential election. The official campaign period for the poll starts Friday.
