TOKYO: In the LDP presidential election, former Policy Research Commissioner KISHIDA Fumio beat Regulatory Reform Minister KONO Taro by 87 votes and was elected the new president.
Despite being viewed as the people’s choice, Kono lost the runoff.
He commented on the election: “I would like to apologize for my lack of ability and thank many of my colleagues, party members, lawmakers, local council members, and the people for their support.”
When asked about his performance in the runoff, Kono replied: “Now that the results have come out, I would like to do my best rather than say too much about the result.”
